Our Figured Maple Guitar Tonewood is hand-selected from our best specimens of two-tone Quilted Maple and Flame ("Fiddleback") wood. Each piece is chosen for characteristics that will provide superb musical tone combined with the beauty of figured wood grain patterns.
Tonewood is wood that generates an instrument's sound. Most guitar makers use two different types of tonewood, one for the top of the instrument, and the other for the back and sides. The types and combinations of these, together with the shape of the instrument, influence its characteristic sound.
Each of our guitar tonewood pieces features a completely individual, one-of-a-kind appearance. Unique traits such as bird pecks, pin-knots, color ribbons, and green stain, enhance their beauty and individuality.
Flame Maple figure (also known as fiddleback or tiger-stripe) is a visual pattern in that runs perpendicular to the grain and lends a 3D or liquid quality to the maple tonewood that intensifies when it is finished. It's been a favorite of instrument makers for centuries.
Quilted Maple figure is distinguished by a grain distortion that creates a wavy pattern resembling the ripples in water, or cloud-like, oval shapes.
