As you may know, a burl is created when a tree grows in an unusual way to compensate for stress, injury, insects, fungus, or viruses.

Our Burly Maple is prized for its bud-like pins, scalloped edges, and medium density. Its high-figure appeals to turners, sculptors, and furniture makers alike. However, burl often challenges the creative and technical skills of both novice and experienced woodworkers. Les says, "Keep your fingers out of the way!"

The Burly Maple turning blanks and slabs in our inventory are excellent for bowls, pens, frames, trim, veneer, inlay, tables, furniture, and more. They are usually slightly darker in color than plain maple wood and show plenty of patterns.
